        Our mission is to protect South Dakota's natural resources from the ravages of wildfire.

Northern Great Plains Interagency Dispatch Center

        Great Plains Dispatch Center was created in 2003 and is the dispatch center for Wildland Fire Suppression.

Burn Permits

        Burn Permits are issued from October 1st thru April 1st each winter.  Weather and snow cover determines if permits are being issued.  Click here for more information on burn permits and burning regulations.

  Rocky Mountain Area Team C Type II Management Team

        This Type II Team based out of South Dakota is starting it's fourth season.  To learn more click here.

  Great Plains Interstate Fire Compact

Fire compact member states will include Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming.

  Volunteer Fire Departments

        The State of South Dakota has 369 Volunteer and City department.  They play a key role in wildland fire fighting.

  State Engine and Hand Crews

        With two hand crews and four engine shops Wildland Fire Suppression works to keep wildland fires in the Black Hills and on the prairie small.

  South Dakota State Fire History

           Wildfire has been key in the history of South Dakota.  The State has been working with other agencies in the area to collect fire history data.

  Governors East River Severity

        Due to the drought that is affecting most of South Dakota, Governor Rounds created the Governors East River Severity (GERS) in 2006.  With the Governor's Drought Task Force the GERS works to provide assistance to Fire Department's and Communities effected by wildland fires.
